Gynecological Surgery Q & A

When might I need gynecological surgery?

You could need gynecological surgery if you have an issue that doesn't respond to non-surgical treatment. Some of the most common reasons for gynecological surgery include:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Abnormal appearance of the vagaina
  • Vaginal laxity
  • Chronic abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Permanent birth control
  • Infertility testing
  • Miscarriage

At Innovative Women's Care, Dr. Brathwaite may recommend gynecological surgery if it's the most effective way to permanently resolve your issues. She focuses on achieving long-term results in a safe way.

How is gynecological surgery performed?

Dr. Brathwaite uses the safest and most advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible for gynecological surgery. She's a robotic surgery specialist, which means she uses state-of-the-art equipment to maximize precision and results.

During robotic surgery, Dr. Brathwaite creates tiny incisions (1-2 centimeters each). She introduces a tiny camera and miniature surgical instruments through these incisions.

Robotic arms securely hold the camera and instruments in place. Dr. Brathwaite views your reproductive system on a high-resolution monitor as she uses a special surgical console to manipulate the tools. Essentially, her hand motions transfer directly to the robotic arms.

Robotic surgery allows Dr. Brathwaite to perform even highly complex gynecological procedures through the smallest incisions.

What are the advantages of robotic gynecologic surgery?

Robotic gynecological surgery offers many advantages over traditional open surgery. They include:

  • Far smaller incisions
  • Maximum surgical precision
  • Less bleeding
  • Less tissue disruption
  • Less discomfort
  • Faster recovery
  • Less time in the hospital
  • Smaller scars

Although robotic surgery is the best option in many cases, it's not right for every procedure or every patient. If you're not a good candidate for robotic surgery, Dr. Brathwaite can explain your options and then design a surgical plan that can give you excellent results.

How long is recovery after gynecological surgery?

Recovery time can vary with the specific procedure. Dr. Brathwaite can tell you what to expect based upon your particular gynecological procedure and specific health needs.

The average recovery time for procedures like a robotic myomectomy (fibroid removal) and robotic hysterectomy is 2-4 weeks, which is far less recovery time than open surgery requires.

At Innovative Women's Care, Dr. Brathwaite offers in-office procedures like colposcopy, contraception, hysteroscopy, vaginal cosmetic surgery, as well as connected to state-of-the-art facilities where she does major gynecological surgery like robotic hysterectomy.
